1/. Intended to Train

The Training Course is aimed at individuals, who as part of their Job description are required to test Portable Appliances, to ensure their Electrical & Mechanical Safety, before use by others. The course is therefore suitable to staff of Hire, Repair, Building, Cleaning and Service Companies. To qualify the participants do NOT need to be qualIfied electricians, but do require a reasonable amount of common sense.

2/. Aim of the Training

The aim of the course is to train selected persons, in the skills and knowledge needed to achieve the standards of competence to carry out the duties of proving the Electrical & Mechanical Safety of Portable Appliances, Extension Leads, 11Ov Transformers.

3/. The Traininq Objective

The objective is that the Trainee, at the conclusion of the course, will be able to carry out a visual inspection, and use the appropriate test equipment to prove the electrical & mechanical safely of the appliance under test, and be assured that it will remain safe until the next scheduled test date, or after hire. The trainee will be able to carry out the necessary procedure, in the specified and safe test area within the company's premises, and on location with caution.

4/. The Traininq Programme

A/. Approx 2-3 hours... Lecture covering relevant parts of The Health &
Safety at Work Act 1974, Electricity at Work Act 1989, and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. The need to test frequency and type of tests.
Labelling (Tested, Warning & Safety), Instructions and preparation of the test item for use/hire.

  • Explanation of what the Test Equipment does and why.
  • When to use other Test Equipment in conjunction with the Portable Appliance Tester.
  • A layman's explanation of resistance, how and why it is measured.
  • The need to record test results. What to do if tests fail.
  • Questions will be addressed through-out the lecture. A short break will be taken at a convenient point.

B/. Lunch Break

C/. 0.5 to 1 Hour ... Explanation of the settings and what the Test
Equipment is doing during the Test. Practical Demonstration of the Test Equipment. Further questions will be answered

D/. Approx 2-3 Hours ... ALL Trainees will use the equipment under
supervision. Any problems arising with the use or understanding the use of the equipment will be addressed. Further questions will be answered.

E/. 0.5 to 1 Hour ... Group discussion, to recap on the topics covered,
highlighting any possible testing problem areas with particular appliances or tools..

5/. Assessment of Achievement

Assessment of Achievement will be measured by the Instructor throughout the course, by question and answer and by the ability to use the test equipment correctly. Further checking of ability will be during the use of the equipment, as well as at the conclusion of the practical use, to check what the equipment is doing and why. A short questionnaire will be completed by participants, and marked. A Certificate will be issued soon after the Training Course is completed

6/. The Instructor

Training will be carried out by Andrew Bothwell of 2000 Test Equipment. Andrew has had some 15 years experience with Test Equipment within the Tool Hire Industry, and a further 10 years as an Equipment Distributor specialising in Test Equipment, Training, Tagging and Recording Systems, and relevant legislation.

Qualified Instructor by the Distributive Industries Training Board (now disbanded).
Formally trained by Clare Instruments, and informal training by Seaward Electronic and others. Technical advice is constantly sought from equipment manufacturers, BSI, HSE & SO. Andrew has to date trained in the region of 3,000 persons in the use of Portable Appliance Testers and associated equipment, for a wide variety of clients such as Greenwich University, Stena Sealink, Croda Universal, Ashtead Plant Hire PLC, Wolseley Centers, J W Bollom, British Gypsum and many other Hire & Electrical Companies through out the UK + Northern & Southern Ireland.
